“We need to strike a chord with the emotional side. We need to change a broader sentiment.”
-Lindsay Williams, Vice President of Marketing and Communications, Shoals Technologies Group
In this episode of Good Energy, Lindsay Williams, VP of Marketing and Communications at Shoals Technologies Group, provides a manufacturer’s perspective on recent policy headwinds for the solar and storage industry and the optimism that still exists for the future.
As tax credits begin phasing out under H.R. 1, Williams notes that Shoals will continue to play within whatever policy boundaries are thrown at it. For Williams, “demand never ceases” in the solar industry, and they will continue to innovate as needed.
For the first time in decades, energy demand is expected to increase, and solar is the most affordable and fastest-to-deploy energy technology. The facts are on the side of solar and storage, and Williams advocates for the government to allow the market to decide the future of the country’s energy mix.
From a communications standpoint, the solar industry needs to connect energy policy and tax credits with the economic prosperity taking place across the country, which is a tall order to successfully accomplish. Williams suggests that the industry look at how the oil and gas industry—which has received subsidies for decades—has communicated their message.
As Shoals deals with the short runway given to the tax credits that its customers are utilizing, Williams emphasizes the need for the company to remain sharp and efficient. After the credits expire, the company will need to be more creative in finding ways to be cost-effective. She concludes by reaffirming that the solar industry is a good place for people to invest their resources and their careers because of its resilience, and the industry is not going anywhere.
