SolarCity Officials are Trying a Different Tactic
SolarCity executives announced a program aimed at cities, remote communities, campuses and military bases under which they will design and operate small, independent power networks called microgrids. “The microgrid product is basically a culmination of all of the technology that SolarCity’s been developing over the past eight years,” said Peter Rive, the company’s co-founder and chief technical officer, calling it “a template that can be scaled up to basically be the next-generation grid.”

First National Solar Company Comes to NC
Sungevity, Inc., a solar-energy company co-founded by a UNC alumus, will become the first national solar company to operate in North Carolina, according to a Feb. 19 announcement from the company. Alec Guettel, a Morehead-Cain scholar who graduated from UNC in 1991, co-founded Sungevity with two friends in 2007. “Like most new companies, we were trying to fill a hole in the market,” Guettel said. “We knew the public’s mindset on solar energy wasn’t extremely positive, and we sought to change that.”

Hanergy Reveals Master Supply Agreement on Thin-Film Products
Hanergy Thin Film Power (HTF) has revealed for the first time the planned thin-film product supply deals signed with Hanergy Group through 2017 for its downstream project business plans. HTF said that Hanergy Group’s master supply agreement to purchase PV modules in each financial year from 2015 to the financial year of 2017 included 1.5GW of a-Si/Si-Ge based thin-film modules.
