Indiana Energy Storage Policy and Market Overview
Indiana regulators and legislators are taking steps to stimulate the energy storage market and deploy systems. Demonstration programs, regulatory adaptation, and grid-scale interconnection guidelines are cementing a thorough foundation for prolonged growth.
State regulators have taken steps to ensure the safe procurement of battery storage resources. The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission adopted significant requirements enforcing utilities to include energy storage, DERs, and demand-management technologies in their IRPs. In 2023, the state passed HB 1173, codifying a robust statutory framework for utility-scale battery storage including fire safety, interconnection, and recycling procedures.
Additional state actors provide resources and funding to reduce the financial burdens of deploying storage. Both a nonprofit green bank, and state funding opportunities support energy storage research, development, and system deployment for homeowners and businesses. While Indiana’s energy storage market is developing cautiously, state regulators are ensuring the proper tools are in place for safe energy storage deployment.
