Austin City Council to Form Solar Committee

Under pressure from solar-power advocates who fear Austin may short-circuit a budding local industry, the Austin City Council is rethinking the city's strategy for expanding solar power.The council is scheduled to vote Thursday to create a "Local Solar Advisory Committee" charged with studying how best to grow the industry. One of the committee's major tasks will be resolving a disagreement between the solar industry and Austin Energy about where to build solar, and when.

A Historical Analysis of Investment in Solar Energy Technologies (2000-2007)

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory has published "A Historical Analysis of Investment in Solar Energy Technologies (2000-2007)." This paper explores the private and public investment in solar energy and how it has fueled industry growth. It shows that investment in solar technologies increased at an annual rate of 145% from 2004 to 2007. At the same time, government support as a share of total investment dropped from 50% to 4% of the total.

Florida Renewables Assessment Study

A draft of the "Florida Renewables Assessment Study" is now available on the Florida Public Service Commission's web site. The report covers many renewable technologies including photovoltaic, concentrating solar power, and solar water heating (for systems larger than 2 MW-thermal equivalent). The draft report shows solar energy systems are cost competative under several future energy scenarios, and shows a negative cost for solar water heating in most scenarios.

New Report Finds U.S. Solar Energy Installations Soared by 109% in 2011 to 1,855 Megawatts

The U.S. solar energy industry installed a record 1,855 megawatts (MW) of photovoltaic (PV) capacity in 2011, more than doubling the previous annual record of 887 MW set in 2010, according to the latest U.S. Solar Market Insight report. The record amount of solar installations is enough to power more than 370,000 homes, and represents a 109 percent growth rate in 2011.

SEIA & Solar Alliance Merge to Drive Effective Policy for Solar at the State Level

The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), the national trade association for the solar energy industry, announced today that it has officially merged with the Solar Alliance, an advocacy organization committed to establishing solar policies at the state level. Effective immediately, the Solar Alliance will operate under the SEIA brand in an effort to present a unified solar industry voice in all advocacy efforts at the state level. Carrie Cullen Hitt, president of the Solar Alliance, is now Vice President for State Affairs at SEIA, and the Solar Alliance team joins Hitt as part of SEIA’s new department for State Affairs.
