As part of its SunShot Initiative, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has released a new funding solicitation focused on improving the accuracy of solar forecasting. The agency will give out up to $9 million over three years.

In the solicitation, the DOE says it will “support efforts to improve the accuracy of solar forecasting at sub-hourly, hourly and day-ahead time frames.” This greater understanding of irradiance changes due to clouds and other weather patterns is expected to help grid operators improve grid stability as solar power deployment increases.
